Isambard Cricket Club was founded in 1995 by a number of friends, many of whom met on an MSc course at Brunel University in Uxbridge, Middlesex. The team were named after the engineer who gave his name to that university - Isambard Kingdom Brunel. After one (nigh-on) legendary match in that first season, the club started playing regularly in 1996, and have continued ever since. Isambard now typically play ten or eleven fixtures a season.
Most of Isambard's players are London-based, and live all around the city, although a few stalwarts travel from such far-flung places as Norfolk and East Sussex. Isambard used to play home games at Ivinghoe Aston C.C., near Leighton Buzzard in Bucks. However, with the demise of that team, Isambard became a wandering side in 2000.
The club's motto ibi aut propre - "there or thereabouts" - neatly epitomised the numerous seasons of mediocre cricket which Isambard impressed upon the sporting world. That said, disturbing signs of what might be considered to be competence started to appear in recent seasons, not entirely unconnected with an influx of Antipodeans to the team. 2004 and 2005 saw the team become a home for a number of 'backpacker cricketers' - Aussies, Kiwis and Saffers who spend some of their time in London playing for Isambard. 2005 in particular saw an unprecedented number of players turning out for the club, and an unheard-of fifteen matches and twelve wins. Nonetheless, there is still very much a place in the club for those whose enthusiasm is not necessarily matched by their ability. Isambard is the home of players who all enjoy their cricket. Hopefully this website will give its viewers some idea of the spirit of the club.
